They are found in areas of the United States with dry desert climates. This is because they are the only type that can burrow and feed in dry conditions. This means that they are generally found in New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, and Southern California.
They look different in appearance from their counter parts in that they have long slender mandibles, rather than the normal, stout, wide mandibles seen in other species. The soldiers of this species are much smaller than those of other species. This allows them to penetrate smaller cracks and openings.
When a home is infested with them, one will often see small mud tubes hanging from shelves, overhangs, wood ceilings, and such. Their food of choice, like many termites, is the cellulose part of wood.
