Subterranean Termites

Do you suspect this type of termite on your Arlington property? Don’t delay – call us right away!

Desert Subterranean

They are found in areas of the United States with dry desert climates. This is because they are the only type that can burrow and feed in dry conditions. This means that they are generally found in New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, and Southern California.

They look different in appearance from their counter parts in that they have long slender mandibles, rather than the normal, stout, wide mandibles seen in other species. The soldiers of this species are much smaller than those of other species. This allows them to penetrate smaller cracks and openings.

When a home is infested with them, one will often see small mud tubes hanging from shelves, overhangs, wood ceilings, and such. Their food of choice, like many termites, is the cellulose part of wood.

Eastern Subterranean

They can develop colonies that are up to 5 million in numbers. They have what is called a swarm intelligence, which means that they act and they move as if they were one entity. It is not uncommon for an Eastern Subterranean colony to live for up to 30 years.

Subterranean termites can be found in may areas throughout a building, whether it is the rafters of the attic or the foundation in the basement. Sometimes you may even find the wings of the kings and queens of the colony lying around. You need to be on the watch for their tunnels and tubes as the swarms are not generally easy to see. This means that many homes are being destroyed without the owners realizing it.

The Formosan Subterranean

Our Arlington termite removal specialists deal with many kinds of termites. The Formosan Subterranean is one of those. It is usually found in the warm southern states of the United States.

Did you know that Hawaii has its own population of Formosan Subterranean termites?

The Formosan Subterranean is nicknamed as the “super termite” due to its ability to eat a vast amount of wood in a very small amount of time. Their healthy adult colonies can eat up to a pound of wood a day. In addition to that, the colony queen is able to lay up to 1,300 eggs per day. These two facts cause them to create the highest amount of property damage of all the termite species in the United States.

They don’t just eat wood, either. They have been known to eat wood, plaster, plastic, and even metal. A tell-tale sign of a Formosan Subterranean infestation is bulging of a wall. This is caused by their tunnels made inside, which are crafted from their saliva and feces. When you see this bulging of a wall, time is of the essence and you need to get a professional to come take care of your problem before the colony eats you out of house and home; literally!

More Info About

The Western Subterranean

The Western Subterranean is the most common type for the western part of the United States. This species usually builds its colony underground, just below the frost line yet still above the water table.

They are capable of entering homes by squeezing through the cracks found in foundations or even walls and other building materials. In fact, they can squeeze through cracks as small 1/16 of an inch wide.

They have a special way of feeding their colony members. Their food of choice is the cellulose part of wood which is found in walls, floors, dressers, tables, etc. Their damage is normally found on the first floor of the home and in the basement. Substantial damage to a home could be experienced in a year or 2, at most, if a colony is built next to a mature and healthy colony.
